GHMC to launch anti-larval operations

Special Correspondent

Procurement of machinery and outsourcing of personnel soon

HYDERABAD: With rains on the horizon, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is mulling over putting a proper infrastructure in place to take up anti-larval operations.

The GHMC has just begun the process of conceptualising a plan for all its circles, including those of the erstwhile municipalities. This is imperative as the MCH area has about 1,000 personnel for taking up anti-larval operations while the surrounding municipal areas have none. This was after Commissioner C.V.S.K. Sarma held a review meet few days ago with his health and sanitation wing on the urgent measures needed and ordered immediate procurement of necessary machinery and outsourcing of personnel to take up preventive measures.

"We are planning to recruit 1,000 personnel for anti-larval operations. They will visit every house for spraying insecticides and larvicides. They will also educate people on measures to keep surroundings clean, diseases and their symptoms," said Additional Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) R. Rama Mohan Rao.

Oil balls, saw dust balls soaked in mosquito larvicide oil will also be dropped in stagnant water pools to check mosquito breeding. However, all these could take at least 20 days to be in place, he said.

Fogging of `malathion' will be intensified with 80 more mobile machines to be procured in addition to the 10 new ones purchased recently. Each machine is expected to cost Rs. 23,000. Six new bigger fogging machines mounted on trucks, each costing Rs. 5 lakh, are also to be purchased but tenders for these are to be called and finalised.
