Cabinet panel to review eviction drive

Roy Mathew

Members of Special Task Force to attend today's review meeting

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet sub-committee constituted to oversee demolitions in Munnar is meeting here on Tuesday amidst accusations that the Communist Party of India (CPI) is trying to wrest the initiative from Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan.

Though the stated objective of the meeting is to review the functioning of the task forces in charge of evictions, it is alleged that the CPI has a hidden agenda of protecting its office-cum-tourist home in Munnar and nearly 600 titles issued when CPI leader K.E. Ismail was Revenue Minister.

The sub-committee, chaired by Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran, has Forest Minister Benoy Viswom, Electricity Minister A.K. Balan, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Law Minister M. Vijayakumar and Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty as members. It is sure to undertake a serious review of the proceedings so far and recommend decisions to be made at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Members of the Special Task Force K. Suresh Kumar (Special Officer), Idukki Collector Raju Narayanaswamy and Inspector-General of Police Rishi Raj Singh have been asked to attend the meeting.

The working of the special task force slowed down recently following protests from various quarters.
