Bangalore: For the first time, the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) is granting autonomy to 12 engineering colleges which have put up good performances. The Academic Senate and Executive Council of VTU recommended the grant of autonomous status to 12 colleges affiliated to the university in the State. According to a press release from VTU on Monday, the grant of autonomous status is subject to the approval of the University Grants Commission and concurrence of the State Government. The 12 colleges are Basaveshwar Engineering College, Bagalkot; BVB College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli; Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore; Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan; M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore; The National Institute of Engineering, Mysore; NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte; PDA College of Engineering, Gulbarga; RV College of Engineering, Bangalore; SDM College of Engineering and Technology, Dharwad; Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Tumkur; and Sri Siddhartha Institute of Technology, Tumkur. The VTU had invited applications from its affiliated colleges having permanent affiliation for being designated as autonomous colleges. A standing committee was constituted to process the applications. The grant of autonomy will help the institutions become distinctly different from other institutions and provide them freedom to achieve excellence. The autonomy will improve the quality of students and make them more employable, the release said. The autonomous status also covers certificate and under-graduate/post-graduate diploma programmes offered in the colleges. However, these certificates and under-graduate/post-graduate diploma shall be issued under the seal of the college only.
Admission
The release said that for the autonomous colleges, the admission of students to under-graduate programmes would be made through the State's Common Entrance Test Cell. There will be provision for students with polytechnic diploma qualification to join under-graduate degree programmes in the second year, as per the prevailing practice in the VTU. Also, students can migrate from one branch or specialisation to another branch or specialisation at the same institution or at another autonomous college. The eligibility requirements for under-graduate and post-graduate degree programmes shall be the same as those prescribed by VTU. However, the minimum requirements for eligibility to post-graduate diploma will normally be a under-graduate degree in engineering and to under-graduate diploma will be a polytechnic diploma.
