Gurudev Express derails

VISAKHAPATNAM : One passenger was feared killed and several others were injured when the Nagercoil-Howrah Gurudev Express derailed near the Duvvada railway station, 30 km from here, late on Monday night.

The accident occurred minutes after the train crossed the Duvvada Station around 10.20 p.m. Ten to 11 bogies derailed, according to Commissioner of Police V.S. K. Kaumudi. The injured were being rushed to the King George Hospital and railway hospitals. A relief team of the railways was also rushed to the spot.

All the train services on the route were disrupted.

Jacob, who was coming from Chegannuru, was in the S2 coach. "There was a sudden jerk and I saw all the coaches S4 onwards lying on their side. Manoj, who was coming from Kottayam along with two others, couldn't locate his other two companions. The track, where the accident occurred, was much below the ground level and huge mounds of mud were on either side of the track making it difficult both for passengers to walk out with their baggage and rescue workers to reach the affected passengers.

Ravindranadh, who was coming from Rajahmundry by the III AC coach, said that he had to break the glasspanes to come out of the coach. Another passenger, Rehaman's leg was severed in the accident. A pregnant woman Suvarna was admitted to the intensive care unit of the King George Hospital (KGH). Hospital Superintendent T. Ravi Raju said best possible treatment would be given to the injured.

Some passengers were seen wailing as their companions were missing while some others were seen crying as they had no money to continue their onward journey.

RTC to the rescue

The RTC arranged buses to transport the stranded victims. Police were seen making announcements about the relief measures. EMRI 108 ambulances shifted the patients.
