COIMBATORE: Professionals with a post-graduate degree and three years experience can apply for any doctoral programme in the Bharathiar University, Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said here on Monday. Speaking to presspersons, he said that candidates from outside the jurisdiction of Bharathiar University (outside Coimbatore, Erode and the Nilgris districts), could also apply for doctoral programmes. Previously, this was not the case. The university had also relaxed the rules regarding choice of guides. Scholars doing doctoral research could choose guides from anywhere in India. "There are not qualified faculty to serve as guides for certain subjects. Hence some candidates are unable to choose certain areas for their research. Now the university has given approval to choose their guides from outside the university. This ensures that they get experts to guide them in their research", Mr. Thiruvasagam said. Schoolteachers, who had two years of work experience, were eligible to apply for an M. Phil. course, the Vice-Chancellor said. M. Phil. candidates would have a paper in Pedagogical Methods, which would give them an insight into the latest teaching techniques. They would also have to undertake practical training in a college for 20 hours. The Vice-Chancellor said that a committee that had been constituted to fix the ceiling on the number of candidates being admitted into M. Phil. and Ph.D. courses in colleges.
