Special campaign to prevent chikungunya in Dharmapuri

Staff Reporter

Water and Sanitation Committees to be formed

Dharmapuri: A special campaign would be conducted in all the habitations in the 251 village panchayats, 10 town panchayats and Dharmapuri municipality to prevent chikungunya. More than 3,000 workers from the Departments of Health, Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), Education, Revenue and Rural Development, self-help group members and non-governmental organisations would be involved to undertake anti-larval measures in all the panchayats in the district.

Water and Sanitation Committee will be formed in each panchayat for the purpose.

The teams which include village panchayat presidents, teachers, Valarkalvi coordinators, SHG members and students would visit households and create awareness among the people on chikungunya and dengue.

A sum of Rs. 10,000 has been allotted to each committee for the purpose. The team members would also educate the people on keeping their surroundings clean and to change water once in two days.

The teams would visit each panchayat on fixed days to undertake anti-larval measures.

District Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal said that health workers would be involved in source reduction and disposal of wastewater from coconut shells, tins, unused tubes and containers. Preventive and control measures including cleaning up of overhead tanks, which supply drinking water, chlorination of drinking water sources with bleaching powder and proper disposal of garbage and other waste materials would also be done by the workers.

Officials from the Department of Health would educate people on safe water supply, personal hygiene and disposal of solid waste, he added. Block-level health officials have been appointed in each panchayat to monitor the campaign.

The Collector appealed to the people to extend cooperation to the district administration to undertake preventive measures.
