Letters to the Editor
In response to a question on the political opposition to the India-U.S. civilian nuclear deal, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is reported to have said that any patriotic person would have welcomed the deal (June 10). Did he imply that patriotism is the preserve of a few like him and that anyone differing with his policies is unpatriotic? The haste with which his government is trying to iron out the differences with the U.S. on the deal makes one wonder whether national interests are being compromised for some quid pro quo benefit. The opposition should ensure that the deal is not foisted on the country.
V. Venkatasubramanian,
* * * In his thought-provoking article "Nuclear deal: on the brink of disaster" (June 9), Satish Chandra has rightly observed that "the cavalier fashion in which this sensitive issue has been addressed has signalled that the government's commitment to India's strategic deterrent is less than total." It is for the opposition to take the cue and ensure that the deal is not finalised until the Hyde Act is satisfactorily amended in the strategic interests of our country.
G. Rajaram,
