Masked men rob merchants

Gold, silver, Rs. 5 lakh cash taken away

PUDUCHERRY: In two separate incidents on the same day in the north police station limit, an ornament dealer from Chennai was robbed of more than 1 kg of gold and a hotel owner found murdered in his hotel.

Masked men on motorbikes sprinkled chill powder on three ornament dealers early morning at Kosakadai, while they were returning to Chennai after a business tour to the town.

The ornament dealers, all frequent visitors to the town for business, were staying in a hotel at Kosakadei for the past few days.

On Tuesday morning as they left the hotel room to catch a bus to Chennai, four masked men on two motorbikes waylaid the trio.

They sprinkled chilli powder on their faces and decamped with more than 1 kg of gold, 22 kg of silver ornaments and about 5 lakh in cash.

According to police, one of the dealers sustained minor bruises, as he resisted the attempt.

The trio hails from Sowcarpet area in Chennai and they frequently visit the town to sell finished jewels to major jewellery marts here. Police are so far clueless to the persons behind the crime.

In another incident, Ashroff, a hotel owner from Mahe, was found murdered in his hotel early in the morning.

Suspects

Police said an employee of the hotel found the naked body lying in a pool of blood inside the hotel. Two persons recently employed by Ashroff, who were also staying along with him in the hotel, were found missing after the murder.

Two special teams have been formed to nab the culprits, according to police.
