Karunanidhi greets Lalu Prasad

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi on Tuesday greeted Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad on the occasion of his 60th birthday, according to an official release. — Special Correspondent

Chief Minister distributes aid

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi on Tuesday gave away Rs.3.20 lakh from the Kalaignar Karunanidhi Trust as medical and educational assistance to 32 persons.

With a view to saving the travelling expenses of beneficiaries from the districts, the money was sent to them by way of demand drafts.

Assistance to the tune of Rs.47.85 lakh had been give away from the trust so far from November 2005, according to a DMK party release. — Special Correspondent

Helpline set up for accident victims

CHENNAI: The railway authorities have set up a helpline following the derailment of Nagercoil - Howrah Gurudev Express on Monday night between Duvvada and Gopalapatnam stations in Andhra Pradesh.

On its part the Southern Railway has also set up a helpline numbers and the people who wanted details could contact the numbers: Nagercoil: 04652-244142; Trivandrum: 0471-131; Kottayam: 0461-2563535; Kochi: 0484-2375131 and Palghat: 0491-2555231, said a release. — Staff Reporter

Board for sanitary workers set up

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government on Tuesday set up a welfare board for sanitary workers with Adi Dravida Welfare Minister as its chairman.

Secretaries of the Adi Dravidar and Tribals Welfare, Finance, Municipal Administration and Water Supply, Rural Development, Labour and Employment, School Education and Health and Family Welfare departments, Directors of Adi Dravidar Welfare, Tribal Welfare, Town Panchayats, Panachayats and Rural Development and Managing Director of TAHDCO will be official members of the board. In addition there will be 11 non-official members in the board, according to an official release. — Special Correspondent

Veeramani welcomes Government's move

CHENNAI: Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani has welcomed the Government's move of providing 50 per cent concession for school students to watch `Periyar,' a feature film made on the life of social reformer and founder of Dravidar Munnetra Kazhagam E. V. Ramasamy.

"The concession has been granted to enable the present and future generations to know and learn about Periyar and his teachings in a better perspective.

This is the third time the Chief Minister has helped Periyar. We welcome it whole heartedly," Mr. Veeramani said. — Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Institute of Labour Studies has extended the last date for sale and receipt of filled-in application for B.A. (Labour Management), M.A (Labour Management) and Postgraduate Diploma in Labour Administration courses to June 20, according to a release here on Monday. — Special Correspondent

Student ends life

PUDUKOTTAI: The body of R. Karthick (19) of Kulakudi near Thottiyam in Tiruchi districta was found hanging in a room of a house in Keeranur on Tuesday.The youth, a student of a private polytechnic college near Keeranur, allegedly took this extreme step as he had failed in a few subjects, police said. The Keeranur police have registered a case.

Literary meet

ARANTHANGI: A literary meeting sponsored by the Aranthai Tamizh Sangam was held here on Monday. A poet, R. Nagalakshmi spoke on the role of women in shaping the future of the country. A faculty from Naina Mohamed College, R. Muthupandi delivered a special lecture.

The president of the Sangam, V. Kailasanathan, presided over the meeting.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 73.63 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday.

The inflow was 587 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Man dies of fever

Nagercoil: Sasi (45) of Pathukani near Pechipparai died of mysterious fever on Tuesday.

The Deputy Director of Health Service, Ralph Selvin, said that medical teams had been sent to the border areas of Kanyakumari district to confirm if the death was owing to chikungunya.

Power shutdown

ERODE: There will be Electricity no power supply to the following places from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, owing to maintenance work at the Mettukadai sub-station, according to a press release:

Melthindal, Maruthi Nagar, Vidyanagar, Villarasampatty, Nasiyanure, Thayirpalayam, Muthampalayam Housing Unit, Jeevanagar, Veerappampalayam, Sengodampalayam, Pavalathampalayam, Vallipurathampalayam, Veppampalayam, Nanjanapuram, Mettukadai, Kadirampatty, Moolakarai, Sakthinagar and Sri Selvam Nagar.

Inaugurated

ERODE: Sathyamangalam MLA L.P. Dharmalingam on Monday inaugurated two town bus services.

One bus would be operated from Sathyamangalam to Bhavanisagar via Dhoddampalayam, five times a day.

It would run six times a day to Kemmanaickkenpalayam from Sathyamangalam via Kodivery reservoir.

The second bus would run from Sathyamangalam to Pudubeerkadavu village thrice a day, Sathyamangalam to Kanakkampalayam twice, and Sathyamangalam to Kemmanaickkenpalayam twice.
