Udhagamandalam
Special Correspondent
Udhagamandalam: The Public Awareness Association of Udhagamandalam has regretted that the roadworks implemented in various parts of the town recently were of poor quality. In a memorandum containing public grievances submitted to the district administration on Monday, the association pointed out that many of the roads re-laid recently were already riddled with ruts and potholes. It wanted to know what action had been taken against the contractors. Pointing out that the concept of toll tax had been introduced here many years ago only to generate funds for maintaining the roads properly, the association sought details of how much revenue had been generated till now and how much had been used for maintaining the roads. It also wanted to know whether the district administration was authorised to collect toll tax from vehicles using the Mettupalayam-Gudalur national highway. Stating that the condition of the roads and bridges was going from bad to worse due to overloaded lorries plying frequently on them, it wanted appropriate action against the drivers. Vehicles transporting equipment for sinking borewells should not be allowed to enter the district. Adverting to the proliferation of resorts and cottages near the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and Bokkapuram, it asked on what grounds permission had been given. Many houses belonging to the Government were occupied by retired officials even as the list of Government employees waiting for quarters was getting longer. A survey should be conducted immediately and the retired officials should be ordered to make way for those in service. Encroachers within the Udhagamandalam municipal market should be kept at bay by adopting `border line' system which was introduced recently at the Coonoor municipal market. In the interest of conserving ground water, a ban should be imposed on sale of water by private vendors. If action was not initiated in the matter, the association would spearhead a demonstration. Claiming that the underground sewerage scheme which was implemented here a few years ago was a failure, the association wondered why the Government had earmarked another Rs. 5 crore for extending it.
