TIRUCHI: The act of giving up his educational career is now a thorn in his heart, as he could not acquire adequate employability skills.

Realising his `mistake' he has now taken up a State-wide 100-day campaign for creating awareness among the masses about the need for imparting compulsory education to the eligible children.

R. Pannerselvam, a 23-year old youth from Tiruthangal village in Virudhunagar district, does not feel shy in explaining the masses the ordeals he had to undergo because of his `wrong decision' to give up education beyond SSLC, which he completed in March 2001.

His `blunder' made him toil hard in a private printing press at Sivakasi for hours together to earn a monthly salary of Rs.400.

"Using my bi-cycle, I had to canvass for the customers in a radius of about 30 km in and around Sivakasi."

He quit the job and took upon the responsibility of creating awareness among the masses about the importance of education.

Kanyakumari

to Chennai

Mr. Pannerselvam, who started his campaign at Kanyakumari on May 7, has planned to reach Chennai on August 14.

He has been addressing the villagers, women members of self-help groups, field officers involved in the elimination of child labour and the students of Child Labour special schools.

He had so far covered several southern and central districts including Tirunelveli, Madurai, Theni and Pudukottai and reached Tiruchi on Tuesday.

He will camp in the city till Wednesday before leaving for Thanjavur on Thursday.
