NEW DELHI: In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha L.K. Advani, has complained that families of a large number of victims of the July 11 2006 train blasts in Mumbai are yet to receive compensation. In the letter dated June 9, 2007, Mr. Advani, pointed out that of the 1,077 victims, only 174 had received compensation through the Railways Claims Tribunal though a special bench of the Tribunal was set up in Mumbai.
Employment
The Railway Ministry announced that it would give employment to next of kin of the deceased and those severely handicapped, but only 15 cases of a total of 235 eligible cases were cleared. Some victims suffered from severe hearing loss and were yet to get treatment and hearing aids.
PM's assurance
Mr. Advani, who recently visited Mumbai, referred to Dr. Singh's assurance to him through a letter dated August 30, 2006 in response to his earlier letter on the same subject. He noted that Dr. Singh had said all hospital and medical expenses of the victims would be borne by the Railways; applications for jobs for next of kin of the deceased were being processed and jobs were being considered for next of kin of those who suffered severe handicaps and lost their livelihood. He said none of the assurances had been fulfilled to any degree of satisfaction.
