Engineering seat selection from today

Bangalore: A total of 26,248 engineering seats will be available for selection during the Common Entrance Test (CET) admission round counselling, which will begin at the CET Cell here on Wednesday. Engineering rank holders from 1 to 1,500 will be allowed to select the available seats on the first day. — Staff Reporter

C.K. Tara chosen for award

BANGALORE: Musician C.K. Tara has been selected for the Santa Shishunala Sharief Award for 2006. The award is in recognition of Ms. Tara's contribution to the field of music.

The award, which includes Rs. 1 lakh and a citation, will be presented to Ms. Tara by Minister for Kannada and Culture H.S. Mahadeva Prasad on Thursday at a function in Dharwad, an official press release said here. — Staff Reporter

Applications invited for MBA course

Belgaum: Visvesvaraya Technological University has invited applications for admission to MBA/ MCA courses and courses conducted by its various departments and affiliated colleges. Application forms are available only on websites http://www.vtu.ac.in and http://pgcet.vtu.ac.in. Applications should be sent to the Member Secretary, CPAC, Visvesvaraya Technological University, Jnana Sangama, Belgaum 590 014, by June 16.

Admission tickets for the MBA/MCA entrance test on July 1 can be downloaded from the same websites. Candidate can produce either the downloaded admission tickets or tickets received by post. — Staff Correspondent

Sugarcane farmer commits suicide

Bidar: A sugarcane grower committed suicide by drinking poison at Ghodampalli village in Bidar taluk on Tuesday. He is the 45th farmer to have committed suicide in the district this year.

Kamal Reddy, 50, leaves his wife and three children. He had taken a loan of Rs. 1 lakh from banks and moneylenders.

In their complaint to the police, his family members said he had three acres of land on which he had grown sugarcane. He was a shareholder of the Naranja Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane. But the factory did not lift the cane even six months after the crop was ready for harvest. He could not even use the sugarcane to produce jaggery as the crop had withered, the complaint said. — Staff Correspondent

Protect Central College grounds: BJP

BANGALORE: The Bangalore city unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged the State Government to cancel the resolution adopted by the Bangalore University Syndicate to lease out 17,000 sq. ft of the Central College grounds to Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. for setting up a power substation.

In a press release issued on Monday, BJP city unit president B.N. Vijay Kumar, P.C. Mohan, MLA, and city unit spokesman S. Prakash urged the Government to issue an Ordinance prohibiting the use of Central College grounds for non-sporting activities. — Special Correspondent

BJP Yuva Morcha meet in Hubli

BANGALORE: The State executive committee meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party's Yuva Morcha will be held in Hubli on June 13. A convention of Yuva Morcha members will also be held on the occasion.

According to a press release by the party, the executive meeting was being held in north Karnataka after 15 years.

The convention will be attended by Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and State party president D.V. Sadananda Gowda.

Man held on burglary charge

BELLARY: Gandhi Nagar police have arrested one person on charge of burglary in Bellary and Adoni in Andhra Pradesh, and have recovered gold and silver articles worth over Rs. 82,000 from him. His name was given as Somashekar (27), a resident of Shatanakote, Nandikottu taluk in Kurnool district. — Staff Correspondent

Protest march

HAVERI: Members of organisations including Jan Vikas Andolan, National Committee For Protection of Natural Resources and Gram Ganarajya Vedike took out a march here on Monday against the Karnataka Panchayat Raj(Amendment) Bill, 2007.

The protesters led by national committee president S.R. Hiremath alleged that the recent amendment was against the tenets of Panchayat Raj movement and was against the Constitution. They urged the Chief Minister to drop Panchyati Raj Minister C.M. Udasi from the Cabinet. — Staff Correspondent

`Eradicate child labour'

Bidar: Citizens should join hands with the Government to fight social evils such as child labour, Deputy Commissioner Vithal Tekraj has said.

He was speaking at the World Anti Child Labour Day Celebrations here on Tuesday. Slavery could be abolished with the cooperation of society. Similarly, by joining hands with the Government, child labour could be done away with, he said. Laws against child labour should be effectively implemented. Compulsory education and awareness campaigns would help, he said. — Staff Correspondent

GULBARGA: The police have launched a search operation to nab the motorcycle-borne duo who grabbed a cash bag containing Rs 1.2 lakhs from a person after throwing chilli powder on his face, on Monday.

The police said here on Tuesday that the victim Mallikarjun Shivashaanappa who had withdrawn money from the Vittal Nagar branch of a bank was proceeding towards Nehru Gunj in his scooter when he was attacked and his bag taken away. — Staff Correspondent

`Ban book'

Bidar: The Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha will organise a State- wide agitation demanding a ban on Banjagere Jayaprakash's "Anu Deva Horaganavanu." "We want the book to be banned because it makes derogatory remarks about Basaveshwara's mother and sister and not because it claims Basaveshwara was a Dalit," the sabha's national president Bheemanna Khandre said here on Tuesday.

Protest against Sonia's remarks

HUBLI: Protests against Congress President Sonia Gandhi's reported statement on diversion of Mahadayi river waters continued in city with BJP activists staging another protest here on Tuesday. Members of BJP led by former council member Ashok Jadhav staged a demonstration at the tahsildar's office on Gokul Road. The protestors also burnt the effigy of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and demanded her apology. Meanwhile, the Congress leaders from the region decided to take a delegation to New Delhi to meet the Congress President. — Staff Correspondent

Conversion: eight arrested in Sirsi

Sirsi: Sirsi police have arrested eight persons for allegedly engaging in conversion activities at Ganeshnagar here on Sunday. The names of the arrested were given as Poul Samuel, Rajaratnam Pati, Pramod Punit of Mundgod, Anthony Alfonso, Iresh Bhovi, Estella Rani, Timmappa Joglekar of Sirsi. Nearly 30 persons, mostly from the backward Bovi community, were found in a house at Ganeshnagar who were learning "Christ Geete". Hindu Jagarana Vedike Sirsi workers brought this matter to the notice of the police. MLA Vivekananda Vaidya and BJP district unit president Vinod Prabhu visited the police station to get the information. — Correspondent

Cholera in Chikmagalur

CHIKMAGALUR: Three cases of cholera have been identified in Chikmagalur city and the stools of 20 persons have been sent to the laboratory for examination. In a press release, the District Health and Family Welfare Officer has said the precautionary measures have been adopted. He has appealed to the people to drink boiled water and keep their surroundings clean. — Correspondent

Arrested

HUBLI: The Hubli police have arrested five persons on charge of running a gambling racket and recovered Rs. 60,200 cash. The names of the arrested were given as Mohan H. Irakal, Manu Kashinath Shetty, Nadeem Allabhaksh Syed, Ashwin Mohansa Irakal and Channayya M.Hiremath, all residents of Vijayanagar, Hubli. Vidyanagar Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent
