KANNUR: The Akhila Kerala Yadava Mahasabha (AKYM) has demanded criminal proceedings against Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas and Transport Commission Ramesh Chandrabhanu for "violation of human rights" in connection with the suicide by the former Kannur Regional Transport Officer K.M. Purushothaman inside the RTO Office here on June 4. AKYM general secretary Valappil Gopi and All India Yadava Maha Sabha secretary V. Krishnan told a press conference here on Tuesday that the Transport Minister and the Transport Commissioner should be booked for creating a situation that led Purushothaman to end his life. They said that the deceased officer had been in service for 24 years and won nearly a dozen good service entries and many awards from the Motor Vehicle Department. No allegations of corruption were known to have been levelled against Purushothaman, they said adding that his suicide notes addressed to Industries Minister Elamaram Karim, MLAs Ramachandran Kadannappally and P. Vishwam and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders E.P. Jayarajan and P.Sasi clearly mentioned the factors that led to the suicide. They also said that the suicide notes revealed the unwillingness of the Transport Commissioner to show humanitarian consideration to Purushothaman, who had been undergoing treatment for cancer, while transferring him to Malappuram. The letters he addressed to the leaders also said that he felt disgraced by the `propaganda' that he had been transferred because of corruption charges involving lakhs of rupees. The department should have ordered an inquiry if there had been any charges of corruption against him rather than transferring him, they said. The AKYM would also approach the Human Rights Commission and the courts with an appeal that case be registered against the Minister and Commissioner.
