Setting up of dental college in Bellary delayed

BELLARY: Following the rejection of application by the Dental Council of India (DCI) due to its late submission by the State Government, the establishment of the government dental college in Bellary has got delayed by another year.

Now, the process of getting permission has to be repeated.

Following an announcement by the Minister for Medical Education that the State government had decided to set up the dental college at the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) last year, efforts were on to build the infrastructure.. The process of recruiting professor, assistant professors, lecturers and other staff had been set in motion and tenders for supply of equipment invited.

As per the norms, the application had to be submitted to the DCI in September. The DCI would then conduct inspection and grant permission.

But, according to official sources, there was delay in getting approval of the university Senate and also from the Finance Department, which resulted in forwarding the application late.

Khaja Naseeruddin, Director of VIMS, told The Hindu that the process of submitting applications would have to be done again.

Meanwhile, a full-fledged "mother clinic" to treat people with dental problems would be started this year itself, he said.
