Borde `pleasantly surprised'

NEW DELHI: Chandu Borde was "delighted'' and "pleasantly surprised'' at being appointed the cricket manager for India's coming tour to Ireland and England.

Borde, a former captain and twice National selector, was picked for his cricket wisdom as a player, selector and of late a coach. "I was pleasantly surprised to tell you honestly. I am looking forward to this assignment,'' said Borde, who was the cricket manager in 1989 when India toured Pakistan under K. Srikkanth's captaincy and returned without losing a Test.

On his role, Borde said he would be in a better position to react once he discussed it with the Board. "I have been a cricket manager earlier too but I would wait for the Board to tell me what exactly is expected of me,'' he said from Pune.

I know the game and I don't think cricket has changed that much. I still know the nuances and in any case I have been in touch through my association with junior cricket. I returned home just two days ago from Dharamsala where I was training talented batsmen. I think I can use my experience to good use for the benefit of Indian cricket,'' said Borde. — Special Correspondent
