Nagapattinam: A team of officials from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), led by Tadashi Kondo, Country Director, New Delhi, on Tuesday inspected the tsunami reconstruction works being carried out in the port here with ADB assistance of Rs.44.58 crore. The Officer on Special Duty (Relief), Disaster Management and Mitigation Department, C.V. Sankar, the Collector, Tenkasi S. Jawahar, the Port Officer, Tamil Nadu Maritime Board, S. Sainath, and other officials accompanied the ADB team during its inspection. Mr. Sankar explain ed the team leader and other members the first phase of works that were carried out in the port at a cost of about Rs.10 crore. He also gave details about other works, including strengthening of the north and south breakwater with natural stones and also extending the breakwater for easy movement of the vessels. Mr. Sankar said that the reconstruction works included construction of five cargo buildings and pointed out that a dredger would also be purchased at a cost of Rs.7 crore. All the works would be completed within the stipulated time, he added. Mr Tadashi Kondo accompanied by three ADB officials, Shineko Muramoto, project head (administration), Anil Das, livelihood specialist and Deepak Singh, engineering specialist, also inspected a road laid at a cost of Rs.1.75 crore in Nambiyar Nagar, a coastal hamlet. Talking to presspersons, Mr. Tadashi Kondo said that he was impressed with the tsunami reconstruction works that were being carried out in the port and expressed the hope that the entire process would be completed within the stipulated time.
