Fake currency seized; woman arrested

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Two persons, including a young woman, have been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police on charges of circulating counterfeit currency notes purportedly smuggled in from Pakistan via Bangladesh. The police claim to have seized fake notes worth Rs. 5 lakh from them.

The police recently received inputs about an international network pushing counterfeit currency notes into the country. Investigations led them to a young woman staying in a hotel at Darya Ganj. Accused Tabbasum Abdullah Motorwala (26) was arrested on June 7 when she came out of the hotel carrying a bag purportedly containing counterfeit notes worth Rs. 5 lakh. The notes were of Rs. 1,000 denomination. At Tabassum's instance, the police arrested Mohammad Shamim when he came to receive the consignment of fake notes from her in the Walled City of Delhi on Sunday.

A resident of West Mumbai, Tabbasum purportedly disclosed that in April and May, she visited Karachi and Dubai in connection with her garment export business. In Karachi, she met Jamil who introduced her to Bilal. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Alok Kumar, Bilal lured her into the fake note business by offering her 2 per cent cut on each consignment. He also promised to bear her air-travel and other expenses.

After her return to Mumbai, Bilal -- who operates from Bangladesh - allegedly instructed her to receive notes worth Rs. 10 lakh from Mukhtar in Kolkata. She went to Kolkata by air on June 3, received the consignment, and came to Delhi by a flight the next morning. She checked in at Ridge Maiden Hotel in Karol Bagh.
