Bidar: The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) will organise a State- level convention of sugarcane farmers in Davangere on June 26. It would discuss the problems faced by sugarcane growers and pressure the Government to announce measures to ensure the welfare of sugarcane growers, Karnataka Sugarcane Growers Association president Kurubur Shantkumar said at a meeting of farmers held here on Tuesday. He demanded that the Government introduce a market intervention scheme to arrest the fall in sugar prices. It should ensure that the cooperative sugar factories buy and crush all the cane grown in the State and pay the farmers on time, he sad. The Government had lost control over factories as most of them were owned by politicians. Some of them were members of the ruling combine, Mr. Shantkumar alleged. It was decided at the meeting that the KRRS would take up a State-wide agitation if the sugar factories failed to pay farmers. Farmers' leaders welcomed the decision to order a Corps of Detectives inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the factories. They demanded that criminal cases be filed against the accused. Procurement of cane should be done in a transparent manner, they said.
