BELLARY: Veera Shivashankar Reddy, Chief Planning Officer of Bellary Zilla Panchayat underlined the need for improving agricultural production in the country. Inaugurating a seed treatment campaign organised by the Department of Agriculture, UPL Company and Farm Technology Institution here on Tuesday, he said that agricultural production had become stagnated and the per capita intake had come down gradually. "It is an irony that our country has been exporting agricultural produce when people here are starving. Efforts have to be made to increase the production and per capita consumption," he said.
Lack of awareness
Lack of awareness about latest farm techniques was a reason for the stagnation in agricultural production. Stress was being laid on extension activities to educate and create awareness among the farmers, he said. "Bellary Zilla Panchayat has set aside Rs. 237 lakh in its current year's budget for extension activities," he said. T.Y. Srinivas, Joint Director of Agriculture, spoke on the importance of seed treatment and how it would ensure good germination and prevent pest attacks in the early stage. A demonstration of paddy seed treatment was held. The UPL company has planned to help seed treatment of paddy free of cost in Bellary and Sirguppa, covering over 25 villages in each taluk. Farmers from Bellary and Sirguppa taluks participated in the programme.
