MATTER OF PRIDE: The Poojya Doddappa Appa College of Engineering in Gulbarga.
GULBARGA: The Poojya Doddappa Appa (PDA) College of Engineering has been accorded autonomy status by the Vishvesvaraiah Technological University (VTU) and the Government from this academic year. Among the 12 engineering colleges granted the status by the VTU, the PDA college is the only one in Hyderabad-Karnataka region and one among the four engineering colleges in north Karnataka to get the status. Once the University Grants Commission approves the autonomy proposal, these 12 colleges will have more academic independence. The PDA college started in 1958 is the only college in north Karnataka region to get permanent affiliation from the VTU for both under Graduate and postgraduate courses. It is also one among the few engineering colleges in the State which has been granted accreditation for all the nine undergraduate courses. Principal of the College V.D. Mythri told The Hindu that the PDA was the only engineering college in the State to offer a course in ceramic engineering. Every year, the total intake for undergraduate courses is 670 and for postgraduate programmes it is 157. Prof. Mythri said that the college also had five research centres providing P.hD degrees in civil, mechanical, electrical, electronic and communication engineering and industrial production engineering. Granting of autonomy status would open up new avenues for students of the region for the college could then have the independence to start postgraduate diploma courses in select branches and also certificate course without waiting for approval from the VTU or the AICTE.
New subjects
The college would then be able to include new subjects in the syllabus and change the curriculum according to its requirements. The college will also have its own Academic Council, Senate, Board of Studies, Board of Examination and Examination Controller. The performance of the college would be monitored by a panel appointed by the VTU. Prof. Mythri said that getting autonomy was the first step towards getting the deemed varsity status for the college. It can now seek the status after six years.
