Overwhelming response to career counselling

Special Correspondent

Over 400 students attend the event organised byThe HinduEducation Plus and Sri Chaitanya Institutions

ANANTAPUR: An overwhelming response to The Hindu Education Plus-Sri Chaitanya Career Counselling for EAMCET students compelled the organisers to run three sessions on the sprawling campus of AF-RDT Ecology Centre on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday. Over 400 students and their parents waited for long hours to get their turn to have an interface with the experts pooled who were from medical, engineering, pharmacy and dental branches.

K. Soudarajan, principal of JNTU at Anantapur, Niranjan Paul, vice-principal of Kurnool Medical College, SRK Reddy, principal of G. Pulla Reddy Dental College, Kurnool, H. Sudarshan Rao, Saibaba, Ananda Rao, senior faculty members from JNTU, J. Ravindra Reddy, Correspondent and Y. Padmanabha Reddy, Principal of Raghavendra College of Pharmacy, Anantapur, attended the session as experts patiently clarified the doubts of students. Mallakarjuna and Anjaneyulu of Sri Chaitanya Institutions, which cosponsored the event, were present.

The experts gave an overview of various options available to those qualified in the EAMCET by explaining the prospects in each branch. They said admission to B.Tech. EEE or MBBS was not end of all but equally glamorous courses and careers were available if the students made a careful selection.

Prof. Niranjan Paul said though counselling for pharmacy courses was conducted last, the choice was not the least as many could make a bright career out of it. No other course in the country enjoyed the patronage as the pharmacy courses did from the Government as well as pharmaceutical industry in the form of hefty scholarships for study abroad.

Pharmacy courses

Supplementing the view of Prof. Paul, Dr. Padmanabha Reddy said the potential of pharmacy courses was yet to be tapped. Pharmacy professionals were required for retail pharmaceutical business, regulation, carrying out clinical trials, drug manufacturing, quality control and finally as academicians to teach in the colleges. A red carpet would be laid out for pharmaceutical professionals in the U.S. and other European countries.

Prof. Soundarajan cautioned parents to know the mind of their wards before pushing them into computer science or any other course to avoid an unpleasant experience later in life. He exhorted them to look for infrastructure, lab facility, faculty, examination system and the placement track record of the institution. The companies recruiting the computer professional were looking for consistent performance of candidates through their education career plus soft skills.

The experts laid emphasis on communication skills, which were prerequisite for landing in plum jobs. According to them, 95 per cent score in the academic examination would not guarantee a good job.

The academicians drew the attention of the participants to the bright career as nurses abroad, saying a graduate course in nursing was also a passport to employment on foreign soil.

Prof. S.R.K. Reddy said the students who failed to get into conventional medical course could seriously consider admission to dental course. He explained that dental surgery was not a pure medical science but some amount of knowledge in physics and chemistry was also essential for a dentist.

The students and parents expressed immense satisfaction after attending the session saying they could listen to the leading experts in a remote place like Anantapur.

Director of RDT Ecology Centre Y.V. Malla Reddy greeted the students and complimented The Hindu and Sri Chaitanya Institutions for organising the event on their campus.
