Kakinada: Telugu Desam Party corporators staged a novel protest in the municipal council meeting here on Tuesday by keeping flowers in their ears and displaying posters ridiculing the group politics in the ruling Congress and how the municipal corporation administration was adversely affected. Soon after the council started its proceedings, TDP corporators, led by Fruity Kumar, standing committee member, rose voicing their protest against the `discrimination' being shown in selection of beneficiaries under the Indiramma housing programme phase two.
Congress unity show
They alleged that the resurvey of households and the beneficiaries' list was aimed at short-listing the people, and only to favour Congress workers. They displayed the banners highlighting squabbles in the ruling Congress and recent rebellion against Mayor and Deputy Mayor necessitating the intervention of party high command. Contrary to earlier practice, this time Congress corporators almost tried to give a united image, obviously under the instructions from the party leadership. They came to the rescue of the Mayor by promptly denying the charge of showing any discrimination in selection of beneficiaries. Congress corporators -- Chamakuri Adinarayana Nagababu, Chodipalli Prasad and D. Mohanti Lakshmana Rao -- confronted with TDP in refuting their charges against the administration. The council meeting witnessed noisy scenes over the alleged demolition of Ambedkar community hall constructed with MPLAD funds in municipal site four years ago, with TDP members insisting on a discussion and the Mayor rejecting the same. When TDP corporators did not budge but continued to interrupt the proceedings, the Mayor adjourned the meeting for over 15 minutes.
Jains issue
The council after re-assembling, discussed the issue of local Jain community installing Mahavir statue on the canal bund without permission and basing on the personal explanation given by Jain leaders, it resolved condoning their action. When the subject on the agenda regarding leasing of municipal school premises for marriages on collection of prescribed charges, Gollamudi Nageswera Rao, lone CPI (M) corporator, strongly opposed it.
