Chikungunya awareness programme

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Door-to-door distribution of pamphlets on Tuesday marked Chennai Corporation's campaign to spread awareness of chikungunya.

Chennai Mayor M. Subramanian distributed pamphlets to several households in Saidapet, including Hospital Road, New Colony, Alandur Road, Vinayagapuram, Jothiammal Nagar and Chetty Thottam, as part of the chikungunya awareness programme organised by the Corporation Public Health department.

Highlighting the ongoing measures being undertaken to combat the disease, he said about 830 health care staff were involved in the awareness campaign.

The corporation had set up medical camps in Chennai Central and Egmore railway stations and the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminal at Koyambedu to screen passengers, especially those coming from Kerala, he said.

Corporation commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni sought public cooperation to spread awareness of the disease. He said fogging and spraying of insecticides were being done regularly in every ward.

Steps were being taken to prevent mosquito breeding in overhead tanks and underground sumps.
