CHENNAI : A newly married couple on a two-wheeler died when a speeding van hit them from behind near Raj Bhavan late in the evening on Monday. Police said the victims, Ramamurthi (25) and his wife Gunavathi (23), residents of MGR Nagar 10th Street, Velachery, were married only 45 days ago. Ramamurthi was employed with a construction company as a supervisor. They were returning home from Vadapalani when the van hit the two-wheeler from behind as the vehicle took a turn near Taluk Office Road-S.P Road junction. Traffic police said the van driver fled from the scene. The couple were seriously injured and were declared brought dead at the hospital. Police said both the rider and pillion were not wearing helmets. Guindy Traffic police are investigating.
Man kills wife
A woman died after her husband allegedly assaulted her on Monday evening suspecting her fidelity. Police said the accused Kuppan (47), a mason by profession, was residing in Mogappair West with his wife Mallika (36). The couple, who have two sons, used to quarrel frequently. On Monday, a wordy altercation snowballed into a heated argument following which Kuppan allegedly stabbed his wife with a knife several times. She was rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital in a serious condition, where she was declared brought dead. After a hunt, J.J.Nagar police arrested Kuppan. The alleged weapon was also seized.
