APMC to take action against traders

MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) will take action against 31 traders who have not formalised their "trade agreement" with the committee.

President of the APMC Krishnaraja Hegde told presspersons here on Tuesday that deposits of such traders with the committee would be forfeited and their plots at the APMC yard in Baikampady would be taken back.

Mr. Hegde said that this action was necessitated as the traders failed to honour their commitment to shift their trade to the central APMC yard at Baikampady despite several concessions and humanitarian consideration shown by the APMC since 1997. They continued to operate from the old Bunder area (formerly APMC yard) despite the fact that the old APMC yard had been de-notified by the Government in an order dated April 27, 2007, he said. Mr. Hegde said all trade that would continue to take place outside the official APMC yard at Baikampady would be termed illegal and such traders would be liable for criminal action against them.
