MANGALORE: The Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, which has taken the lead to introduce Tulu as the third optional language for students of sixth standard, has prepared a draft textbook. A committee formed by the academy, according to the guidelines of the Department of State Education Research and Training (DSERT), Bangalore, will meet here on Wednesday and is expected to give its approval to the draft textbook, sources in the academy told The Hindu . The textbook has been prepared according to the DSERT guidelines, they said. The committee comprises two primary school teachers, two high school teachers, a teacher from a first grade college, two pre-university college teachers, an arts teacher, two language experts and president and registrar of the academy. The DSERT has recommended to the Government that Tulu can be introduced as the third optional language from the sixth standard. The State Cabinet is yet to approve this proposal.
Hopeful
The academy members are hopeful that the Cabinet will approve the proposal. Even if the Cabinet did not give its proposal, the academy was planning to introduce Tulu for students of sixth standard in some private primary schools in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts from this academic year. But the students might not be able to appear for the examination in the subject. It would be an attempt to teach Tulu to interested students, they said. In that case, the academy was planning to pay the chosen teachers in such schools. The fund would be raised either through donations or by the resources of the academy.
