Vector study team visits affected areas

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A vector study team from New Delhi arrived here on Tuesday and inspected the fever-affected areas in the eastern part of Ernakulam district, from where most numbers of chikungunya cases were reported.

R.S. Sharma and P.K. Srivatsava, joint directors of National Vector-borne Disease Control Programme, New Delhi, visited Arakuzha, near Muvattupuzha, along with D. Radhakrishnan, Additional Director, Public Health, Directorate of Health Services; P.A. Krishnan, Deputy DMO, K.V. Beena, senior biologists.

The team also met District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish.

They cited the need for a systematic means to reduce mosquitoes, with public cooperation. Garbage and plastics have to be cleared systematically all through the year.

They said cleanliness should be a way of life. Viral infections would increase with change of climate.

People should take precautions, especially those with less immunity, they said.

A total of 38 cases of suspected chikungunya were reported in the district on Tuesday, taking the total number of suspected cases to 462.
