Thiruvananthapuram: Forty-four new cases of suspected chikungunya were reported from the district on Tuesday, taking the total number of cases this year to 245. Two cases of dengue fever - from Punnakkamugal and Kanjirampara - have been serologically confirmed and one case of malaria from Poonthura. Of the suspected chikungunya cases reported on Tuesday, three cases were from Kesavapuram, 10 from Vellarada, 17 from Vellanad and seven from Nedumangad. Seven cases were reported from various private hospitals. Four medical camps were conducted in the district on Tuesday. An army medical team conducted a camp at Vembayam, while the Health Department organised camps at Vellarada, Malayadil and Kilimanoor. A total of 1,217 people attended these camps. Of the 44 suspected chikungunya cases reported on Tuesday, six were detected at these camps. An intensive cleanliness campaign was organised as part of the massive drive against infectious diseases. Cleaning activities were organised in major hospitals such as General Hospital and Women and Children hospital at Thycaud.
Further measures
The district health administration held a meeting with the City Corporation authorities, doctors from urban primary health centres and those from other systems of medicine to discuss the strategies to be adopted further. The Indian Medical Association despatched eight doctors to the fever-affected areas for assisting the Health service doctors.
