MONSOON TRAVAILS: Traffic was hit on several roads like this one in Greenlands after rain lashed parts of the city on Tuesday. PHOTO : P. V. Sivakumar
HYDERABAD: Heavy, unexpected but welcome showers lashed several parts of the State Capital on Tuesday bringing immense respite from a humid and sweltering week. The Met Office recorded 9.1 mm rainfall by evening. Though the day was cloudy and the prospect of showers loomed in the horizon all day, the sky opening up all of a sudden late in the afternoon caught road users unawares. While the middle-aged and the elders on most roads accelerated to escape the showers and reach offices or homes, youngsters were seen driving two-wheelers, soaking up the downpour. As usual the sharp showers that lasted close to an hour at some places led to chaotic traffic and the resultant jams at Rasoolpura junction, Greenlands, Punjagutta, Khairatabad and Lakdikapul. With road digging works going on one hand and water-logging on the other, motorists had a tough time on the road. Compounding the problems due to water-logging were the potholes making the drive tougher. Pedestrians and motorists alike faced several problems due to rainwater logging at Chermas and KCP Junction in Ameerpet, Hyderabad Public School in Begumpet and Malakpet. Power supply was also disrupted in East and West Marredpally and other parts of the city.
