CRIMENOTES

BANGALORE: A 22-year-old man, who was doing time at the Central Prison in Parappana Agrahara on Hosur Road in a theft case, was bludgeoned to death by his cellmate on Tuesday.

The police gave the name of the dead as Mohammed Sadiq of Bhadravathi in Shimoga district.

Around 10 a.m. when Sadiq was sleeping in his cell, fellow felon Gopal smashed his head with a stone.

On hearing Sadiq's screams, other prisoners who were working in the open field rushed to the cell and apprehended Gopal.

The jail authorities rushed a critically injured Sadiq to NIMHANS and he was declared brought dead by the doctors, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Soumendu Mukherjee told The Hindu .

Gopal of Anekal, who has been convicted in an assault case and is an undertrial in another case, is said to display "deviant behaviour" and had on several occasions quarrelled with other prisoners. A minor altercation between Sadiq and Gopal could have resulted in the attack, Mr. Mukherjee said.

The other prisoners lodged in the same cell told the police that they had never witnessed a serious fight between Gopal and Sadiq. The two were from different places and were strangers until they were lodged in the same cell.

Gopal had picked up the stone to murder Sadiq from a heap dumped near the cell by the Public Works Department which is constructing a toilet block at the prison, Mr. Mukherjee said.

The Parappana Agrahara police have registered a case of murder.

When contacted, Additional Director-General of Police (Prisons) S.T. Ramesh said Gopal was being treated for psychiatric problems since 2005 and was discharged from the jail hospital in February 2007.
