Police officers' body against proposed Act

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Police Officers' Association on Tuesday said the proposed new Police Act would be against the interests of policemen.

The association's general secretary K.V. Ramanarasimha Reddy, at a press conference here, said that the new Act would only help revenue officials boss over policemen. As per the draft, Mandal Revenue Officers would prepare annual confidential reports of sub-inspectors.

"When the MROs are not familiar with specialised training the policemen undergo, how can they assess the performance of SIs?" asked Mr. Reddy. He remarked that at a time when the Supreme Court had mooted proposals to ensure that the Police Department functioned independently, the proposed Act would force the policemen to depend on revenue officials. He appealed to the Government to withdraw the draft Police Act.
