Karan in last eight

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Karan Rastogi had his mental toughness tested once again as he got past Aditya Madkekar 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in the pre-quarterfinals of the $10,000 ITF men's Futures tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Wednesday.

While the top-seeded Karan played with a lot of authority in the decider despite the hot and humid conditions, Madkekar allowed his game to dip after having given a good account of himself in the second set.

It was hoped that Madkekar would put an improved show from the last edition in Dehradun, where he had lost to Karan in three sets, but he lacked the belief, especially at the crunch, and was broken early and was quickly down 1-4.

Vinod Sridhar, Vishnu Vardhan and Sanam Singh did very well to eliminate three foreign players without dropping a set between them. The man on a hat-trick, Prakash Amritraj, dismissed Gursharan Singh for the loss of four games.

The results: Singles (pre-quarterfinals): Karan Rasogi bt Aditya Madkekar 6-4, 2-6, 6-1; Navdeep Singh bt Tushar Liberhan 6-0, 6-2; Vinod Sridhar bt Tsung-Hua Yang (Tpe) 6-2, 6-4; Vishnu Vardhan bt Matthew Smith (GBR) 6-4, 6-1; Sanam Singh bt Robert Searle (GBR) 6-3, 6-4; Sunil Kumar bt Rohan Gajjar 6-1, 6-4; Prakash Amritraj bt Gursharan Singh 6-3, 6-1; Hsin-Han Lee (Tpe) bt Ashutosh Singh 6-3, 7-6(4).

Doubles (quarterfinals): Tushar Liberhan and Sanam Singh bt Rohan Gide and Sumit Prakash Gupta 2-6, 6-2, 6-2; Vijay Kannan and Vinod Sridhar bt Rohan Gajjar and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan 6-2, 3-6, 6-1; Hsin-Han Lee and Tsung-Hua Yang (Tpe) bt Stephen Amritraj and Purav Raja 6-4, 7-6(2); Ashutosh Singh and Sunil Kumar bt Dilshod Sharifi (Tjk) and Gurmehar Singh 7-6(4), 7-5.
