Chhattisgarh downs Maharashtra

Special Correspondent

ANANTAPUR: Defending champions Uttar Pradesh boys and Chhattisgarh girls recorded contrasting victories in the second round of the junior National basketball championships at the District Sports Authority courts here on Wednesday.

U.P. was stretched by Punjab 63-59, while Chhattisgarh posted a facile 79-54 win over Maharashtra.

Till half-time, however, Maharashtra wasn't too far behind against the favourites. Its opportunistic forward-line made frequent inroads into the rival's restricted area. Where Chhattisgarh showed its class was in the swift counter-attacks.

However, the holder's scoring percentage register a steeped climb from the third quarter onwards against a tiring Maharashtra defence.
