Government policy on deck-beds soon

Special Correspondent

PANAJI : The Goa Government had finally decided to form a comprehensive policy to regulate the deck-beds and umbrellas on beaches for the tourist season 2007-08.

The State Government submitted an undertaking to a division bench of the Bombay High Court in Goa on Monday that the policy would be ready by next month as it was compelled to do following a petition filed by the Goa-based Britto Amusements Private Limited.

The Company had challenged the arbitrary manner in which the State Government had permitted a local hotel group to put up beach-umbrellas.

Policy

Tourism Director Sandeep Jacques, in an affidavit before the Court, admitted that there was no standing policy since 2002-03. Only guidelines were framed for every tourist season for erection of deck-beds and umbrellas by different hotels.

The deck-beds and umbrellas suddenly appear on the 106-km-long Goa beach every tourist season without any norms and generally hindering free movement along the beach.
