Attack on student leader: hand of liquor mafia alleged

BERHAMPUR: Students’ leaders of south Orissa have alleged that the attack on welfare club president of Berhampur university, Santosh Das, is related to the liquor mafia behind the spurious liquor tragedy that claimed 35 lives in Ganjam district last year.

Members of the South Orissa Students’ Development Council (SOSDC) got together for an emergency meeting in the city on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the attack on Santosh. Student leaders from Koraput, Kandhamal, Gajapati and Ganjam districts attended this meeting. Later in the evening they handed over a memorandum to the Berhampur Superintendent of Police (SP) addressed to the Chancellor, the Governor.

Secretary of SOSDC Suryanarayan Panda said through their memorandum they had tried to draw the attention of the Chancellor to the real reason behind the attack on Santosh on Monday.

Santosh had filed an affidavit before the Justice P.K.Patro Commission, which is investigating the Ganjam liquor tragedy. In his affidavit and hearings he had alleged that the illicit liquor mafia was using Berhampur University campus for their illicit trading. Suryanarayan alleged that miscreants had attacked Santosh thrice after he brought out these facts before the judicial commission.

The students’ leaders are also not satisfied with the arrest of two persons in relation to the recent attack on the students’ union leader of the university.

They said the two kingpins behind the attack were yet to be arrested by police. According to them, the police had not taken action against the attackers of Santosh before although he had reported it to the police.

These leaders threatened to start a students’ agitation throughout south Orissa if the main accused behind the attack on Santosh were not arrested soon.
