Full-fledged CRPF training camp soon

PERINGOME (KANNUR): The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Training Camp being developed on a 275 acre land here will be a full-fledged camp with the completion of the construction of the administrative building.

The training camp with a capacity to train 1,215 CRPF recruits will be fully functional with the completion of the administrative building next month. At present, 1,800 recruits were being trained at the camp, located about 60 km from the district headquarters. The camp will have three training units and an administration wing.

The newly-built quarter guard and bin magazine (a large underground facility for storing explosive weapons) of the training camp was inaugurated by the CRPF Deputy Inspector General and the training camp Principal P.G. Gopinathan Nair at a function here on Wednesday. Total estimated cost of the two constructions was Rs.85 lakh.

Mr. Nair told presspersons here that the recruits were being given training in all internal security weapons including light machine gun, 51 mm motor and sophisticated electronic gadgets, including night vision devices.

The only shortcoming of the place was that there was no field firing facility for training recruits in use of trajectory weapons. Nearest place where the facility was available was in Coimbatore, he said adding that safe and expansive area was required for the facility. He said that steps were on to identify nearest location for jungle training. The DIG said the Kakkadavu drinking water scheme, once completed, could cater to the requirement of the camp which required five-lakh litres of potable water a day.
