A solution: Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran showing the Combusia species of fish, efficient in controlling the mosquito responsible for chikungunya. Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy is in the picture.
12860907 CHENNAI: The State Government is fully geared to prevent the spread of chikungunya fromneighbouring States. Till date not a single case has been reported in the State. Special medical camps in border districts and fogging of all vehicles entering the State are some of the preventive measures being taken by the Government. Apart from a thorough medical checkup of people crossing the borders, any person showing symptoms of the disease is quarantined and admitted to hospital. The affected person is not allowed to move further into the State, Health Minister K.K.S.S.R.Ramachandran told reporters here on Wednesday. He said to create public awareness of the disease, District Collectors had been asked to conduct campaigns and review meetings on June 23 and June 24. Enough stock
All government hospitals had enough stock of medicines and there was no need for people to approach private medical shops. He warned that the licence of medical shops would be cancelled if they gave medicines for the disease without a proper prescription. The Minister said as it had been found that the “combusia” species of fish was efficient in controlling the mosquito responsible for the disease, the Government had decided to distribute the fish to district administrations for rearing them in ponds and stagnating water.
