Residents upset at sewage discharge

Pools of waste water pose health hazards, say people at G.N. Mills area

HEALTH HAZARD: Sewage being let out along the Urmandampalayam Road in the city.

COIMBATORE: Residents in the G.N. Mills area on Mettupalayam Road are upset at the discharge of sewage from buildings.

About 30 persons representing various layouts in the area have even signed on a petition to the Chief Minister appealing for action against encroachments and the discharge of sewage. One of the residents, M. Devendran, has said in the petition that the encroachments on the road from G.N. Mills Junction to Urmandampalayam proved a obstruction to traffic. The road leads to Ganapathy and Annur.

Sewage from some of the buildings let out sewage that stagnates along the road. Pools of waste water posed health hazards, the residents say. “We have been suffering this problem for a long time. No one seems to be concerned about the problems that such open discharge of sewage can cause,” says Mr. Devendran. “We have sent the petition to the Chief Minister only after realising that no action will be taken at the local level,” he says.

Students of a college and employees of a post office and industrial units find it difficult to use this road because of the stench. The authorities should take note of the problems caused by encroachments, he says.
