This Day That Age
The food situation in the country is showing "distinct signs of improvement" as a result of a number of measures taken by the Government, and the price of wheat and rice has shown a downward trend in important cities like Calcutta and Bombay, the Union Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Ajit Prasad Jain, said in New Delhi on June 13. The measures taken by the Government include the formation of wheat zones, amendment of the Essential Commodities Act and restriction of credit by banks on foodgrains. Mr. Jain disclosed that negotiations were on with the US for further supplies of foodgrains from its farm surplus on a long-term credit basis. Under an agreement signed last year, India is to get 3.5 million tons of wheat, two lakh tons of rice and five lakh bales of cotton on long-term credit from the US.
