dated June 15, 1957: Austerity measures

Two important announcements were released on June 13 through an official spokesman of the Government of India. One is that all Central Ministers have voluntarily agreed to a cut in their salary and allowances by ten per cent. The second is that the Prime Minister will move into a smaller house and leave the present bungalow for State guests. The announcements were presumably intended to be a gesture in consonance with the need of the time for drastic economy. Both in Parliament and at the recent AICC meeting, criticism was voiced about the high and pompous living of Ministers.
