Delhi waiting for release of water

Smriti Kak Ramachandran

`The situation will soon ease off'

NEW DELHI: Delhi's wait for release of additional water from Uttar Pradesh is far from over, but the administration is unwilling to give up hope. While it perceives the slight increase in the supply to the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant as a "positive sign", it is critical of Haryana for vacillating over release of water from the Bakhra Nangal Dam.

Chief Executive Officer of the Delhi Jal Board Arun Mathur said: "We are yet to get the full supply of 140 MGD from U.P. for the Sonia Vihar plant, but we are confident that the situation will soon ease off."

The Sonia Vihar plant, which gets about 50 MGD of water from U.P., is currently getting 90 MGD. Delhi is hopeful of brokering a deal to get the full quota from U.P. under the new State Government.

"The Chief Ministers of the two States are yet to meet, but we do not foresee any problems in getting our allocated share of water," said Mr. Mathur.

Tehri Dam

Referring to the augmented supply that the Sonia Vihar plant is currently getting, he said: "There has been an increase in water being released from Tehri Dam, which has led to a small rise in the water being supplied to Delhi. But what we are looking at is a continuous supply, which will not fluctuate."

On Haryana's delay in releasing 20 MGD of water from the Bakhra Dam for the Nangloi water treatment plant, Mr. Mathur said: " Nangloi is running at half its capacity. Haryana only has to release this water to Delhi, it does not have to give it from its own share."
