AWAITING FACELIFT: The bridge to be repaired. File Photo
Intensive repair work on the Kulithalai-Musiri Periyar Bridge across the Cauvery will begin on Friday. Though preliminary works are under way, the core repair work is expected to start only if the traffic on the bridge, connecting Kulithalai in Karur district and Musiri in Tiruchi district, is partially suspended during daytime. The foundation stone for the 1.5-km-long bridge was laid in 1971 but it took eight years for the structure to be thrown open to the public. Since then, constant wear and tear, besides nature, have taken a toll on the structure necessitating immediate repair work. The Government, in 2006, deputed a technical team of experts from Highways Department to examine and estimate the extent of damage caused to the bridge. Based on the team's recommendations, major repair work estimated to cost Rs. 2.9 crore, were sanctioned. As a prelude, heavy vehicle traffic on the bridge has been regulated since January last and from Friday all traffic will be suspended on the bridge between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to facilitate repair work.
