An investigation conducted by a high-level team from Madurai Kamaraj University in Mumbai this week suspects that undergraduate degree mark statements of the university are on sale for distance education students. The Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu, led the three-member team to carry out a spot inspection at the centres where examinations of Directorate of Distance Education are held. "We received complaints about fake marks statements. The varsity is in the process of gathering evidence of the suspected individuals selling mark statements and later it will be informed to the Mumbai police," Dr. Maruthamuthu, told The Hindu on Thursday. Another team from the university will go to Mumbai soon to continue the investigation further. The two others who accompanied the Vice-Chancellor included the Director of Distance Education, S. Vadivelu, and the Controller of Examinations, S. Shanmugiah. Based on information gathered from locals, the MKU team found that a person involved in selling fake mark statements was changing his base often by shifting to new locations in Mumbai and surrounding areas. The university received complaints last year about fake degrees available and how the image of the institution was taking a beating in Mumbai. Officials almost caught red handed a candidate who applied for original degree certificate by showing a fake mark statement at the office of the Controller of Examinations here but he managed to escape. Dr. Maruthamuthu said that he was told during the Mumbai visit that the suspect was also selling fake degrees of other universities in the State. "We will track the person soon. The help of Mumbai police is being sought in this case," the Vice-Chancellor said. The varsity detected irregularities when a particular student had the MKU mark statement when his name was not in the enrolment list of the DDE.
