Strike was inevitable: ACEU

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI : Air Corporation Employees Union (ACEU) general secretary J. K. Badola said on Thursday that the strike by the employees of the state-owned airline, Indian, became inevitable in the wake of the management's attitude on the question of promotional avenues.

He was speaking to reporters after the airline employees called off their three-day-old, nationwide strike on reaching an understanding with the Government on payment of arrears and employees' career prospects.

"We were left with no alternative but to go on a flash strike. All 12,000 employees were ready for suspension," Mr. Badola said. He said there was never any disagreement on the Rs. 267-crore arrears package.

Asked about the suspension of 27 employees, Mr. Badola said the orders would be revoked soon, but the Indian management and Civil Aviation Secretary Ashok Chawla said due procedure would be followed in each case.

Among the others who participated in the talks were Indian Chairman and Managing Director Vishwapati Trivedi, Director (Personnel) Anoop K. Srivastav, ACEU president Dinkar Shetty and regional secretaries from the other metros.

Earlier, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel warned of stringent action after the Chief Labour Commissioner and the Delhi High Court declared the strike illegal. The Minister said the strike was ``unwarranted.''
