The Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society (TANSACS) is in the process of identifying locations to set up blood storage centres in peripheral Chennai, as part of a project to set up 238 such facilities across the State. The centres will come up in areas that lack immediate access to a full-fledged blood bank. They will also be located near highways to serve the emergency transfusion needs of accident victims. The new facilities will complement the existing 54 storage centres across the State. "The focus has shifted from establishing more blood banks that require huge investment to putting in place a more equitably distributed network of access points for whole blood transfusion," said Supriya Sahu, TANSACS member secretary and project director. Tamil Nadu has a strong network of 231 blood banks, including 94 in the State sector. The Rs. 5.95-crore proposal for the centres is among the key components of the National AIDS Control Project-Phase III. TANSACS aims to put the new storage infrastructure in place over the next three years.
