Manmohan breaks tradition: Pakistan paper

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh broke "established tradition and norm" by not sending a message of goodwill to his counterpart Shaukat Aziz while flying over Pakistani air space on his way to Germany for the G-8 summit or on his way back, a Pakistani newspaper said on Thursday.

The News recalled that last October, Dr. Singh conveyed a message of goodwill and peace while being airborne over Pakistan. The message reaffirmed India's commitment to building peaceful and neighbourly relations with Pakistan based on mutual trust and confidence. But no such message came last week, when Dr. Singh flew over Pakistan on his way to Heiligendamm.

Obliquely connecting it to the political developments in Pakistan, the newspaper said: "While the government of the day is facing the worst hostile political situation on the domestic front, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has also forgotten to drop goodwill message" to Mr. Aziz.
