A small farmer with a big heart

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: He might be a small farmer from a remote village in Chikmagalur district, but he has a large heart. K.H. Kumaraswamy, a small farmer from Kunnalu village, proved this by donating Rs. 5,000 to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund in a bid do his bit to help the families of poor farmers who have committed suicide.

“I am an ordinary farmer. But I want to be of some help to these unfortunate families,” Mr. Kumaraswamy remarked at an interaction of farmers with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy in Bangalore on Thursday.

The audience, which was surprised by his gesture, welcomed it with a round of applause. He also appealed to the media to desist from giving excess publicity to farmers’ suicides. This would affect the confidence of other farmers who are in debt trap, he observed.

In fact, it was ordinary farmers like him who outshone the established farmers’ leaders at this interaction meeting. While the farmers’ leaders made only speeches on the agricultural sector, the ordinary farmers came out with clear and practical suggestions on the methods of energising the farm sector.

Another farmer lamented that he had to sell two quintals of his ragi produce to buy a pair of shoes for his son.
