MYSORE: The much-publicised sound and light show at Mysore Palace can be viewed free of cost for a week from June 18.

According to an official press release, two shows will be held daily, with the first show in Kannada beginning at 7.30 p.m. and the second show, either in English or Hindi, at 8.30 p.m.

The sound and light show, or son et lumiere, organised jointly by the Tourism Department and the Palace Board, Mysore, will be staged on all days, except Sunday.

Tourism Commissioner G. Kumar Naik has appealed to the public to make use of the opportunity.

The show, which is of about 50-minutes duration, will have background narration in three languages. The Kannada version will be staged on all days. The English and Hindi versions will be staged on alternate days.

The show had landed in a controversy after scion of the Mysore royal family Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar took objection to the script of the programme authored by writer Lingadevaru Halemane.

The script was revised accordingly and a dry run of the show was held last Saturday at the palace for the press and scholars. The show, which has been hanging fire for more than a year now, traces the rich history and cultural heritage of Mysore. The narration of Mysore’s history is accompanied by psychedelic lighting of the palace during the show.

The show makes an attempt to take the audience back in time to various phases of Mysore’s long and rich history, starting with the mythological killing of the demon Mahishasura by the goddess Chamundeshwari through the upheavals of the Wadiyar dynasty founded by Yaduraya and Krishnaraya in the 14th century to the last king of Mysore, Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar.

The reign of Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, during the tumultuous 18th century, the latter’s dogged resistance to British occupation and his sacrifices too are part of the show.
