Ganesan welcomes EC’s action against officials in Madurai

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: BJP State president L. Ganesan on Thursday welcomed the Election Commission’s action against officials in Madurai in connection with the byelection scheduled for June 26.

Mr. Ganesan told a press conference here that it had become clear now that the officials were working at the behest of one person. The election body’s “good decision” had raised hopes that it would take stringent action against violations. Peace-loving people should come in large numbers and exercise their franchise without fear. He explained that the party leader, Pon.Radhakrishnan, had already objected when the Congress candidate came in with a large number of his supporters and filed his nomination.

On the Presidential election, the BJP leader said the decision of the Third Front meeting in Chennai would be of great significance. He described as a welcome change that leaders such as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa were being consulted for deciding candidates. Mr. Ganesan said the Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekawat was acceptable to all as a candidate and he should be supported.

The BJP leader said parents should object if teachers and education department officials themselves made arrangements to enable school students to view the film “Periyar.”

The late Dravidar Kazhagam leader’s philosophy was questionable, he said.
